Wheezing rhetoric straight from the early 1980′s when American still had a manufacturing base.
The foundation of that base has long ago been outsourced to cheaper fields by the corporate oligarchies like Home Depot ,Walmart and Costco.
The Big Box stores have no economic national allegiance just as Americas smörgåsbord of races that shop these stores are indifferent to the plight of their neighbor next door to them as their is no national ethnic or cultural cohesion that then equals survival protectionism .

“Early American leadership saw that a new national economic policy was required. Accordingly, protectionism was viewed as a means to protect the less developed American industrial and agricultural economy from more efficient”

China Japan and Korea are very aware of these facts and have closed themselves off ethnically, culturally and economically.
Sure they will watch the latest Hollywood trash or gobble a BiG Mac.
    So what.
At the end of the day they are still Chinese or Japanese,
Watching bemused at the bad behavior of these western consumer barbarians that inflict national wounds upon themselves with little regard to each other.
Cannily they trade the trinkets and baubles that the barbarians can not get enough of.

When one walks the mammoth consumer depots in America with a gaggle of peoples from every part of the globe their is no sense of belonging except in the consumer lunacy of felling ones cart to the brim.
Having a tantrum about American Olympic uniforms when everything else has gone to shit is grasping gasping national lunacy.
